Nuclear Regulatory Commission Proposes Changes to Radiation Safety Standards Amid President Trump's Nuclear Expansion
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is proposing to eliminate the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle, a foundational safety standard that has minimized radiation exposure in the U.S. for 50 years. This proposal comes as President Trump seeks to significantly increase domestic nuclear energy production to meet rising electricity demands driven by data centers and artificial intelligence. The NRC's new 'graded approach' would require facilities to implement more rigorous radiation protection measures as they approach dose limits, while maintaining existing maximum exposure standards. The Energy Department has already ceased using ALARA, and the NRC plans to finalize its new regulations soon.
