FAA Reduces Certified Controller Target by 2,000 in 2026 Hiring Plan
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced a reduction in its target for certified professional air traffic controllers as part of its 2026 hiring plan. The new target is set at 12,563, a decrease from the previous goal of 14,633 outlined in the 2025 plan. This adjustment comes amid ongoing challenges in training and retaining air traffic controllers, as well as capacity constraints within the FAA. The decision reflects a strategic shift in the agency's approach to managing air traffic control resources, aiming to align workforce goals with current operational realities and budgetary considerations.
