AI Fact-Checking Reveals Hundreds of Errors in Paul Johnson's 'Modern Times'
An AI-driven fact-checking process, specifically using Claude Code / Claude Cowork, has uncovered hundreds of factual errors, framing problems, and contradictions in Paul Johnson's book 'Modern Times.' While ChatGPT initially found a dozen errors, Claude identified 460 factual errors, 117 framing problems, and 23 contradictions. The analysis, conducted by Ariel Krakowski, involved the AI flagging questionable claims and then independently researching them. The author of the article expressed significant surprise at the sheer volume of errors found by Claude, noting that Johnson's writing, with its frequent use of exact dates, populations, and other specific data, makes it particularly susceptible to such an audit.
