Weed Scientist Nevin Lawrence Honored for Outstanding Extension Program in Nebraska
Nevin Lawrence, an associate professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, has been recognized with the 2025 Outstanding Extension Program Award by the Gamma Sigma Delta Nebraska Chapter. Lawrence's work focuses on weed management in crops such as sugarbeet, dry bean, sunflower, and potato, particularly in the Nebraska Panhandle. His research on the herbicide-resistant weed Palmer amaranth has been pivotal, leading to the U.S. EPA granting a Section 18 Emergency Exemption for the herbicide Goltix in 2023. This exemption allowed for its use on 38,000 acres of sugarbeet in Nebraska and Colorado, significantly impacting the sugarbeet industry by reducing yield losses caused by Palmer amaranth. Lawrence's efforts have also extended to organizing key agricultural events and updating essential pest management resources.
