Alameda County Sells Oakland Lot for $10 Amid $1.7 Million Debt Burden
A vacant lot in East Oakland, California, has been sold for a nominal price of $10 to the Black Cultural Zone Community Development Corporation (BCZ), a nonprofit organization focused on community revitalization and affordable housing. Despite the low sale price, the property comes with approximately $1.7 million in unpaid taxes, penalties, and liens. The 15,000-square-foot parcel, located at 8215 MacArthur Blvd., has been neglected for decades, accumulating weeds and illegal dumping. Alameda County supervisors approved the sale as a strategic move to repurpose tax-defaulted properties for affordable housing. The property's market value is estimated at $900,000, but its debt has made it difficult to sell through traditional means. The BCZ plans to clean up the lot and eventually develop it for community use, although specific plans for the site have not yet been finalized.
