Dutch Homes Enhance Climate Resilience with Innovative Rain Fences
In the Netherlands, housing corporations are implementing rainwater storage systems within garden fences to address increasing rainfall and drought conditions. These 'rain fences' are designed to store up to 2,160 liters of water, alleviating pressure on drainage systems during heavy downpours and preserving water for use during dry spells. The initiative is part of a broader effort to adapt to climate change, as the country faces more frequent weather extremes, including hotter summers and heavier rainfall. The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute has noted a 1°C increase in average temperatures since 2000, exacerbating the challenges posed by climate change. The rain fences are part of a pilot scheme by Woonstichting 'thuis, a social housing provider, in Veldhoven, where residents are already seeing benefits and increased interest from neighbors.
