Waymo's Self-Driving Cars Begin Mapping Portland Amid Safety Concerns
Waymo, a leader in autonomous vehicle technology, is set to begin mapping the streets of Portland, Oregon, with its self-driving cars. This initiative, supported by Portland Mayor Keith Wilson, aims to contribute to the city's Vision Zero goals, which focus on eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries. Initially, the mapping will be conducted with human drivers at the wheel to familiarize the technology with the city's layout. Despite the potential benefits, the introduction of Waymo's vehicles has sparked concerns among city leaders and residents. Some have raised issues regarding the safety and economic impact of autonomous vehicles, citing past incidents where Waymo cars have been involved in controversial situations, such as blocking emergency vehicles and ignoring traffic signals. The Portland Bureau of Transportation has stated that Waymo must obtain a permit to test its vehicles in the city, although mapping activities do not currently require one.
