Lloyd Center Closes After Over 60 Years, Thousands Attend Final Sendoff
The Lloyd Center, a historic mall in Northeast Portland, closed its doors after more than 60 years of operation. Thousands of people gathered to bid farewell to the mall, which has been a significant part of the community's social and commercial life. The closure marks the end of an era for many who have fond memories of the mall. Victoria Pike, a manager at Gambit’s Games and Anime, expressed nostalgia, having frequented the mall since childhood. The mall's closure reflects broader changes in consumer behavior, with shifts towards online shopping and social media impacting traditional retail spaces. Joe Brown’s Carmel Corn, one of the original tenants, saw a surge in business as customers flocked to the mall in its final days.
