Study Identifies Arginine's Role in Immune System's Cancer and Virus Recognition
Researchers from Rockefeller University have identified the amino acid arginine as crucial for the immune system's ability to recognize cancer and virus-infected cells. The study found that arginine deficiency disrupts ribosome function, leading to decreased production of MHC-I protein, which is essential for T-lymphocytes to detect altered cells. Experiments showed that diets high in arginine reduced tumor development and improved viral infection tolerance in mice. The study suggests that adequate arginine intake supports immune function, although it should not be considered a treatment for cancer. Foods rich in arginine include beef, poultry, nuts, and legumes.
