Scientists Explore Cloud Seeding to Redirect Hurricanes
Hurricane Lala recently struck Hawaii, causing widespread destruction, including washed-away homes, power outages affecting over 125,000 residents, airport closures, flash flooding threats, and one confirmed fatality. Amid this devastation, researchers are exploring the potential of cloud seeding to mitigate hurricane impacts. Cloud seeding involves introducing small particles, such as dry ice or silver iodide, into clouds to induce precipitation. A recent study published by the Public Library of Science suggests that this technique could be used to alter hurricane paths, potentially steering storms away from populated areas. Historical experiments, such as the U.S. government's Project Stormfury in the 1960s, attempted to reduce hurricane intensity by modifying their eyewalls. While the concept remains controversial, advancements in atmospheric science may bring this possibility closer to reality.
