Heatwave Safety Guidelines Issued for Highway Workers in India
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has released comprehensive guidelines to protect workers from the ongoing heatwave affecting construction, maintenance, and toll operations on national highways. These measures aim to ensure the health and safety of the workforce while maintaining uninterrupted highway operations. The guidelines include staggered working hours to avoid peak heat periods, mandatory cooling breaks, and shaded rest areas. Additionally, workers will have access to potable drinking water, Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS), and glucose. Patrol ambulances will be equipped with ice packs, cold water, and IV fluids to assist during emergencies. The guidelines also emphasize worker acclimatization and training to identify and respond to heat-related illnesses.
