Nature Medicine has published a framework for auditing AI chatbot behavior in mental health interactions, highlighting the lack of FDA-approved generative AI tools for mental health use. The framework addresses the absence of standardized audit criteria and safe behavior guidelines for AI systems in mental health contexts. The mental health AI chatbot market, valued at $568.46 million in 2024, is expected to grow, with hospital and clinic deployments increasing. However, the lack of a validated safety audit methodology poses risks, as evidenced by research showing adverse outcomes from AI chatbot use in mental health trials. The FDA has yet to publish a risk-based framework for generative AI in mental health, leaving sponsors without operational guidance.
