Chefs and Fishers Adapt to Changing Marine Species Due to Warming Waters
Chefs and fishers in the South West are adapting to an influx of Mediterranean fish species, driven by warming waters. The Marine Biological Association reports an ongoing octopus bloom, which has severely impacted local shellfish populations. Fisherman Buck Bennett notes an increase in red mullet and various bream species, traditionally rare in the area. This shift is forcing the fishing industry to reconsider its methods, as traditional species like mackerel and cod become scarce. Chefs, like Jamie Park of the Adam Handling Collection, are adjusting menus to include these new species, such as octopus, which are now abundant. The changes highlight the need for the industry to remain flexible in response to environmental shifts.
