MBTA Announces World Cup Train Ticket Pricing, Aims for Affordability Over Driving
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has announced the pricing for the special World Cup Commuter Rail train service from Boston's South Station to Foxboro's Gillette Stadium. The round-trip tickets will be priced at $80, which is higher than previously reported estimates. These tickets will be available for purchase starting April 8 at 11 a.m. via the mTicket app. The MBTA aims to transport 20,000 fans on 14 trains for each of the seven matches scheduled in June and July. The ticket price is set to help recover $35 million in costs for upgrades to Foxboro Station. Despite the higher cost, the MBTA argues that the train service offers a more predictable and affordable alternative to driving, parking, and dealing with event-day traffic delays. Fans have expressed dissatisfaction with the pricing, feeling that World Cup attendees should not be viewed as a 'cash cow.'
