2026 Sunscreen Safety Report Highlights Limited Effective Options
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has released its 2026 Guide to Sunscreens, analyzing 2,784 products and recommending only 550, or about 20%, as both safe and effective. The report emphasizes the importance of using sunscreens that protect against both UVA and UVB rays, while avoiding harmful chemicals such as oxybenzone and homosalate. Mineral-based sunscreens, which use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, are highlighted as safer alternatives due to their lower absorption into the skin. The guide also warns against inflated SPF claims and the use of sprays or powders due to inhalation risks. The FDA has yet to finalize regulations on sunscreen safety, though it recently announced potential approval of bemotrizinol, a safer chemical filter widely used in Europe. Experts recommend a layered approach to sun protection, combining sunscreen with protective clothing, shade, and limited sun exposure during peak hours.
