Hurricane Impact Windows Tested for Storm Resistance
Consumer Reports has evaluated hurricane impact windows to determine their effectiveness in protecting homes during severe storms. These windows, designed with two layers of glass bonded around a plastic inner layer, are built to withstand high winds, water intrusion, and flying debris. The top-rated window, the PGT WinGuard, scored 98 overall and costs $640. It received high marks for wind and rain resistance as well as impact protection. Other notable options include the Marvin Coastline window at $1,560 and the Eco Window Systems Eco-Guard Series 150 at $590. Tests involved simulating hurricane conditions, including shooting a 9-pound two-by-four at 30 mph toward the windows. While regular windows shattered, the impact windows remained intact, demonstrating their ability to keep homes safer during storms.
