El Nino Expected to Reduce U.S. Drought Coverage by Spring 2026
Building El Nino conditions are projected to significantly reduce drought coverage across the United States by April 2026, according to Eric Snodgrass of Nutrien Ag Solutions. Currently, approximately 75% of the country is experiencing some level of drought, but this could drop to 30% or less if El Nino follows historical patterns. The phenomenon is expected to bring increased precipitation during fall, winter, and early spring, which are critical for water resources in the Intermountain West. Meanwhile, the Midwest is experiencing a heatwave, with temperatures in the mid-90s °F (mid-30s °C) and high humidity, while the western U.S. is trending cooler.
