Continuous Glucose Monitors Linked to Reduced Mortality and Cardiovascular Complications in Type 2 Diabetes Patients
New data presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) indicates that continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems are associated with a significantly lower risk of death and cardiovascular complications in adults with Type 2 diabetes who use basal insulin. A large, real-world study, which included Abbott's Libre technology, found that CGM users had a 45% lower risk of death at 12 months and a 36% lower risk at 24 months compared to non-users. The study also observed a reduction in cardiovascular-related complications, including fewer recurrent events. This research evaluated nearly 28,000 adults with Type 2 diabetes on basal insulin in the U.S., employing a rigorous methodology designed to mimic a randomized clinical trial. Additionally, a separate French observational study involving over 253,000 Type 2 diabetes patients showed that using Libre technology nearly halved acute diabetes-event hospitalizations across various insulin and non-insulin therapies.
