UK Woman Wins Case for Sterilization Rights, Exposing NHS Gender Bias
Leah Spasova, a psychologist from Oxfordshire, successfully challenged the NHS's refusal to fund her sterilization, highlighting gender bias in the health service. The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman found that the Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, and Berkshire West Integrated Care Board (ICB) denied women, but not men, funding for sterilization. Spasova's decade-long battle revealed that the ICB's policies were inconsistent and discriminatory, as they cited cost and potential regret as reasons for denying female sterilization, factors not applied to male vasectomies. The ombudsman's decision has prompted the ICB to review its sterilization policy, ensuring equal access for women.
