U.S. Coast Guard Graduates First Class at Former Birmingham-Southern College Campus, Supported by Rep. Terri Sewell
The U.S. Coast Guard has graduated its first class of service members from its new training center located at the former Birmingham-Southern College (BSC) campus in Birmingham, Alabama. Twenty-nine Coast Guardsmen completed a week-long leadership and management school course, marking a significant step since the Coast Guard began operations on the campus in early June. The service branch acquired the property earlier this year after BSC closed in May 2024 due to financial difficulties. U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell, whose 7th Congressional District includes the campus, attended the graduation and expressed her support, highlighting that the event represents a continuation of BSC’s legacy of education and public service. Captain Jacob McMillen noted that while logistical challenges were overcome, the campus proved well-suited for leadership training.
