The legal action was prompted by a cell phone video, recorded by a spectator, showing actress Fatemeh Masoudifar resting her head against actor Mehrdad Sedighian's chest on stage. Authorities deemed this interaction a violation of 'social norms,' as physical contact between unrelated men and women in public is prohibited under the Islamic Republic's laws, even on stage. The production company, however, stated that the cell phone video was misleading due to its tight angle, making the actors appear closer than they were. Furthermore, the company clarified that the characters portrayed in the scene are siblings, which would exempt their physical contact from the prohibition under Islamic law, and that the embrace occurred during a moment of crisis within the play's narrative.
