Tornado Touches Down in Atlantic Beach Amid Severe Long Island Storms
A tornado struck Atlantic Beach, New York, on Thursday evening as severe thunderstorms swept across Long Island. The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for parts of Nassau County, including Oceanside and Baldwin Harbor, from 6:52 p.m. to 7:04 p.m. The tornado, which originated as a waterspout near Rockaway Beach, made landfall at the Sun and Surf Beach Club, causing significant damage. Heavy rainfall accompanied the storms, with rates of 1-3 inches per hour and localized totals reaching up to 5 inches. A flash flood warning was also in effect for the South Shore of Nassau County. Emergency services, including 17 rescue teams, responded to reports of flooding and potential entrapments. County Executive Bruce Blakeman declared a state of emergency, citing damage to beach structures and vehicles trapped in floodwaters.
