Thailand to Expand Suvarnabhumi Airport Auto Gates to Include More Nationalities, Easing Congestion
Thailand is set to expand the use of automated passport control gates at Suvarnabhumi Airport to include travelers from 31 additional nationalities by the end of August. This measure, agreed upon in principle by the Immigration Bureau, aims to alleviate congestion at the airport, which handles approximately 190,000 passengers daily during peak tourism seasons, including around 70,000 international arrivals. The expansion is projected to make about 6.5 million more passengers eligible to use the Auto Gates, along with approximately 900,000 holders of certain long-term visas. If fully operational, this initiative could allow about 53% of arriving international passengers to utilize the automated system. The rollout will be phased, dependent on equipment, security, and biometric data readiness, with first-time visitors still required to undergo biometric registration. The goal is to enhance the convenience, speed, and safety of the immigration process for tourists.
