China Intensifies Public Relations Efforts in Turkey Amid Investment Setbacks
China has increased its public relations activities in Turkey following the collapse of a planned investment by the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD. The company had initially planned to establish a plant in Turkey but shifted its focus to Europe, causing embarrassment for the Turkish government, which had offered tax incentives to attract the investment. In response, China has launched a 'propaganda blitz' to improve its image in Turkey. This includes placing unsigned articles in pro-government media and promoting high-level engagements between the Chinese Communist Party and Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party. Additionally, China has been engaging with Turkish opposition parties and inviting Turkish journalists to visit China, presenting a curated image of the country.
