Ohio Supreme Court Rules Republican Governor Candidate Ineligible, Impacting Primary Ballot
The Ohio Supreme Court has ruled that Heather Hill, a longshot Republican candidate for governor, is ineligible to appear on the primary ballot. The decision was unanimous among the justices, siding with Republican Secretary of State Frank LaRose. Hill's running mate, Stuart Moats, withdrew from the ticket on April 22, leading to the disqualification. LaRose cited state law, which mandates that a gubernatorial ticket must file jointly and does not allow for a replacement of a running mate less than 70 days before the primary unless a candidate dies. Hill argued that the law does not address the withdrawal of a running mate and that her removal infringes on voter rights. However, LaRose contended that allowing a replacement at this stage could disrupt the election process.
