Russian Attacks Threaten Ukrainian Publishing Boom Amidst Cultural War
Russian military actions are severely impacting Ukraine's burgeoning publishing industry, with recent drone and missile strikes destroying millions of books and critical infrastructure. A significant incident involved the destruction of Ranok's warehouse in Kharkiv, where 8 million books, representing over 85% of the publisher's stock, were incinerated by jet-powered Shahed drones. This attack, along with others, has led to the destruction of 13 million Ukrainian books this summer alone, approximately one-third of all books printed in Ukraine this year. Ukrainian officials, including Deputy Minister for Culture Bohdana Laiuk, view these attacks not just as collateral damage but as a deliberate assault on Ukrainian culture and identity, arguing that Russia aims to eliminate Ukrainian language and literature.
