Los Angeles City Council Progressives Endorse Mayor Bass, Snub Raman in Mayoral Race
In a significant political development, three members of the Los Angeles City Council's progressive bloc have endorsed Mayor Karen Bass for reelection, marking a setback for Nithya Raman, a fellow progressive and challenger in the mayoral race. Councilmembers Eunisses Hernandez, Ysabel Jurado, and Hugo Soto-Martínez, all affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America, have expressed their support for Bass, citing her leadership during immigration raids and efforts to reduce homelessness. This endorsement comes despite Raman's previous alignment with the progressive bloc on issues such as police spending and anti-encampment zones. Raman, who had initially endorsed Bass before entering the race, has shifted towards more centrist positions, including maintaining current police staffing levels. The endorsements are seen as a strategic move to weaken Raman's appeal among progressive voters.
