Redistricting Hearing in Representative Thompson's District Sparks Tensions Over Black Representation
A public hearing on redistricting in the Mississippi Delta, held in the district of U.S. Representative Bennie Thompson (D-MS), saw residents criticize what they perceive as a Republican effort to gain power at the expense of Black representation. This hearing was the third in a series intended to gather public input on redistricting, with this particular session being the first in Thompson's majority-Black district. Residents expressed concerns that the proposed redrawing of electoral maps, influenced by the U.S. Supreme Court's 'Callais' decision which weakened the Voting Rights Act, would dilute the voting strength of Black communities. Republican Governor Tate Reeves and some state legislators have called for Mississippi's electoral maps to be redrawn following the 'Callais' decision.
