Great Britain Achieves Record Wind Energy Generation in Early 2026
In the first quarter of 2026, Great Britain experienced a significant increase in wind energy generation, reaching a record 29.2 TWh, according to Montel EnAppSys' electricity market report. This surge was largely driven by storms Goretti, Ingrid, and Chandra, which boosted wind output levels, contributing to both domestic supply and exports to neighboring markets. Overall renewable energy generation rose to 40.3 TWh, marking a 20% increase from the same period in 2025. The rise in wind energy helped reduce reliance on gas, which saw a 16% decrease in generation compared to the previous year. Despite these gains, curtailmentâwhere excess energy is not utilized due to transmission constraintsâremained a challenge, with 3.6 TWh of potential wind output not used.
