X, the social media platform, is contesting a Turkish court order that mandates the restriction of access to the campaign account of Ekrem Imamoglu, the jailed mayor of Istanbul, within Turkey. The account, which has around 225,000 followers, serves as a crucial channel for Imamoglu's presidential campaign. The court cited national security and public order as reasons for the restriction, a justification frequently used by Turkish authorities to block prominent accounts. Imamoglu, seen as a key rival to President Erdogan, was detained in March 2025, sparking significant protests. He faces charges of corruption, espionage, and terrorism, which he denies. X's compliance with the order, while challenging it legally, highlights the tension between its free-speech branding and government demands.
