Study Finds Hourly Walking Breaks Mitigate Health Risks of Prolonged Sitting
A recent study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine highlights the benefits of taking short movement breaks to counteract the negative health effects of prolonged sitting. The study involved nearly 11,500 adults who were generally in good health and had full-time jobs. Participants were divided into groups to take five-minute walking breaks every 30, 60, or 120 minutes during waking hours. The findings revealed that while the 30-minute group saw the greatest benefits, hourly walking breaks offered the best combination of effectiveness and feasibility. Experts like Anna Di, a chiropractor, and Patricia Greaves, a certified fitness trainer, emphasize that regular movement is crucial for maintaining health, as prolonged sitting can lead to increased risks of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and poor mental health.
