New Museum Discovery Reveals Evolutionary Secrets of Seahorses
A new study published in the Journal of Lost Species has identified a previously misclassified fish, Australyichthys aegis, as a distinct genus separate from true seahorses. The discovery was made using micro-CT scanning technology, which revealed unique skeletal features. The fish, known as the helmethead sea muppet, was found in deep reefs off southern Australia. This finding highlights convergent evolution, where similar traits evolve independently in different lineages, and underscores the biodiversity of the Great Southern Reef.
