Blue Energy Seeks to Connect First Small Modular Reactors to Texas Grid
Blue Energy Global Inc., a nuclear startup based in Maryland, has submitted an application to connect its project to the Texas power grid, operated by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). This marks the first-ever application for small modular reactors (SMRs) to connect to the Texas grid. Blue Energy plans to construct up to five 300-megawatt nuclear systems, totaling 1.5 gigawatts, to supply a Crusoe Inc. data center. The company is utilizing a 300-megawatt reactor design from GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy, with the first unit expected to be operational by 2033. Additionally, Blue Energy intends to build approximately 1 gigawatt of natural gas-fired generation as part of the same project, with two units scheduled to begin operations in 2030 and 2031.
