Food Companies' Legal Tactics Challenge Public Health Laws in the U.S.
A recent investigation highlights how major food companies, including Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and Mondelez, have been using legal tactics to challenge public health laws in the United States and other countries. These companies have filed numerous lawsuits against regulations aimed at improving public health by promoting better nutrition. The investigation, conducted in collaboration with international health academics and media, found that between 2010 and 2025, 239 lawsuits were filed across six countries, including the U.S., targeting policies such as soda taxes and advertising restrictions on unhealthy foods. These legal actions are seen as efforts to delay or weaken public health initiatives, which the companies argue infringe on their rights.
