Post-Menopausal Women Show Enhanced Brain Function Gains from Aerobic Exercise
A recent study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease indicates that post-menopausal women who engage in regular aerobic exercise experience greater improvements in executive functions compared to pre-menopausal women or those performing gentler stretching routines. Researchers tracked 93 healthy women, aged 20 to 67, over six months. Participants were divided into two groups: one performing aerobic workouts and another doing stretching and toning. The study found that post-menopausal women in the aerobic group showed the most significant gains in mental skills such as planning, task switching, and resisting distraction. These improvements were observed after three and six months of consistent exercise. Interestingly, the study also noted that these brain benefits were not linked to an increase in estrogen levels, suggesting other mechanisms are at play, such as improved blood flow to the brain or enhanced cardiovascular fitness.
