Jorge Cardenas, the Chief Information Officer of Brownsville, Texas, has been instrumental in transforming the city's connectivity landscape. Under his leadership, Brownsville has significantly improved its internet infrastructure, moving away from its previous status as one of the worst-connected cities in the U.S. The city has completed a middle-mile fiber project, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act, which laid about 100 miles of fiber. This infrastructure supports a citywide private 5G network and an AI factory, enhancing data transmission and smart city capabilities. Cardenas emphasizes the importance of sustainability and digital inclusion in these initiatives.
