Family of Nicaraguan Migrant Challenges ICE's Suicide Claim, Demands Investigation
The family of Victor Manuel Diaz, a Nicaraguan migrant who died on January 14, 2026, at an ICE detention facility in El Paso, Texas, is disputing the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) preliminary assessment that his death was a 'presumed suicide.' The family is calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances of his death. Diaz was found unconscious and unresponsive in his room at Camp East Montana, and while the official cause of death is still under investigation, DHS initially labeled it as a suicide. Diaz's family, however, rejects this claim, with his brother Yorlan Diaz stating that Victor was not suicidal and was in the U.S. to support their mother. Concerns have been raised about the handling of the autopsy, as Diaz's body was transferred to William Beaumont Army Medical Center instead of being examined by local medical examiners, which was the procedure for previous deaths at the facility. The family's attorney, Randall Kallinen, is advocating for an independent autopsy.
