Spokane Wildfires Highlight Growing Climate Risks
A trio of wildfires in Spokane, Washington, has burned over 10,000 acres, destroyed more than 700 structures, and displaced approximately 65,000 residents. The fires, which began on August 1, 2026, have been fueled by hot, dry, and windy conditions, exacerbated by severe drought. Experts, including climate scientist Daniel Swain, warn that such extreme wildfire behavior is becoming increasingly common due to climate change and urban expansion into fire-prone areas. The Pacific Northwest, where over half of the nation's uncontained fires are currently burning, is forecast to experience more critical fire behavior through August 7-8, with similar conditions expected to persist.
