Meteor Explosion Off Massachusetts Coast Causes Statewide Sonic Boom
A meteor exploded off the coast of Massachusetts, creating a loud boom that was heard throughout the state on Saturday afternoon. According to WBZ-TV Chief Meteorologist Eric Fisher, the explosion occurred around 2:11 p.m. Eastern Time, with reports of the sound coming from as far as Ipswich and Johnston, Rhode Island. The American Meteor Society received numerous reports of a fireball sighting around the same time, indicating the meteor's path through the atmosphere. Satellite data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration confirmed a meteor signature near Boston's South Shore. While most meteors burn up in the atmosphere, larger ones can create fireballs and sonic booms.
