YouTube Enhances TV-Mobile Integration, Eliminating Wi-Fi Dependency for Account-Linked Devices
YouTube is significantly overhauling how its mobile application interacts with YouTube on televisions. The primary change is that phones and TVs no longer need to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network to initiate video playback from a mobile device to a larger screen. Instead, users only need to be logged into the same YouTube account on both devices. Google is repositioning the phone as a companion to the TV, moving beyond its traditional role as a remote control or Cast device. A new 'Play on different device' option will appear on mobile, allowing users to directly start a video on another device, such as a TV, without first playing it on the phone. Furthermore, using the phone will no longer interrupt video playback on the TV. While long-form content plays on the big screen, users can continue browsing YouTube, watching Shorts, or searching for other content on their mobile device.
