Portuguese Communist Party Celebrates 50th Avante! Festival Amidst Rising Far-Right Influence
The Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) recently held its 50th annual Avante! Festival in Seixal, a suburb of Lisbon, drawing hundreds of thousands of attendees. The festival, named after the party's newspaper, commemorates Portugal's 1974 Carnation Revolution, which ended the fascist Estado Novo regime and colonial wars, ushering in democracy and a progressive 1976 Constitution. This year's event featured a wide array of cultural activities, including literature, art, theater, music, and political debates, with a strong emphasis on defending civil freedoms and workers' rights. The festival also highlighted international solidarity, particularly with Palestine, and included speeches from PCP leaders and a video message from Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel. The celebration occurred against a backdrop of increasing political influence from Chega (Enough!), Portugal's far-right party, whose slogans are now prominent in Lisbon.
