Fort Polk Soldier's Wife Faces Imminent Deportation After ICE Detention
Maisa Lopes Eliaser, the wife of active-duty Fort Polk soldier Alexis Jaramillo, faces deportation after being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Eliaser, originally from Brazil, was detained during a green card interview in Montgomery, Alabama, after missing a biometrics fingerprinting appointment. This missed appointment led to a removal order by an immigration judge. The family, recently transferred from Fort Rucker, Alabama to Fort Polk, did not receive the court notice due to the address change. Eliaser's detention has sparked a legal battle, with the family's attorney, Anna Hubbard, appealing the decision to the Board of Immigration Appeals. Despite the appeal, ICE can deport Eliaser at any time, potentially separating her from her husband and their U.S. citizen son for up to 10 years.
