Rancho Cucamonga Implements AI Wildfire Detection System to Enhance Fire Response
The Rancho Cucamonga Fire District has launched an AI-assisted system designed to detect small brush fires from a distance of 100 yards. This system, known as FIREBird, can deliver images of the flames, their location, and a weather report to public safety dispatchers within three seconds. The initiative aims to improve response times to wildfires, which can rapidly escalate due to strong winds. The system was developed by Azusa-based Lindsey FireSense and has been tested by firefighters in Rancho Cucamonga and San Bernardino County. The deployment includes 30 systems installed at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, marking Rancho Cucamonga as the first city in California to use FIREBird. The devices are solar-powered, operate day and night, and use thermal detectors to identify wildfire-specific heat wavelengths.
