Dr. Andrew Patel, a Head and Neck Surgeon at Oath Surgical, has performed the first Genio implant procedure in Oregon, marking the first time this advanced sleep apnea treatment has been conducted in an ambulatory surgery center (ASC) setting in the Pacific Northwest. The Genio system, developed by Nyxoah, is an FDA-approved therapy for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). It is notable for being the first single-incision bilateral hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HGNS) therapy that does not require an implanted battery and is fully compatible with 3T MRI. This procedure works by stimulating the hypoglossal nerve to maintain an open airway during sleep, offering a mask-free alternative for patients who struggle with traditional CPAP machines.
