Inter-American Commission on Human Rights Holds Hearing on U.S. Protest Suppression
The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) convened in Washington, DC, to address complaints regarding the excessive use of force and suppression of freedom of expression during protests against immigration enforcement in the United States. The hearing, which marks the first of its kind by the IACHR on U.S. soil, was prompted by appeals from civil rights lawyer Antonio Romanucci and Thomas Becker of the University Network for Human Rights. They highlighted the U.S. government's actions against protesters, journalists, and bystanders during demonstrations opposing the Trump administration's immigration policies. The hearing included testimonies from individuals like Rev. David Black, who recounted being assaulted by federal agents during a protest. The U.S. government, represented by Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Julianna Aynes-Neville, provided limited responses, citing ongoing litigation.
