European Union Leaders to Host AI Roundtable Amid Growing Global Competition
The European Union is set to host its first-ever roundtable later this year to address critical issues surrounding artificial intelligence (AI), including economic competitiveness, national security, and geopolitical influence. This decision marks a significant step for the EU, which has been perceived as lagging in the global AI race dominated by the United States and China. The EU's AI Act, which became law in 2024, primarily established a legal framework for AI governance but did not focus on enhancing competitiveness or security. The upcoming summit aims to address these gaps by treating AI as a strategic priority. The European Commission's AI Office has published a report highlighting the rapid advancement of AI capabilities and the EU's need to catch up in terms of infrastructure and investment.
