Passenger's Power Bank Mishap Causes 16-Hour Flight Delay
An easyJet flight from Hurghada, Egypt, to London was diverted to Rome due to a passenger's power bank being found in checked baggage. The incident occurred when a passenger informed the crew that a power bank was charging a device in their checked luggage, which is against aviation regulations. Power banks, which contain lithium-ion batteries, are prohibited in airplane cargo holds due to the risk of fire. The diversion resulted in passengers having to wait overnight in Rome before continuing their journey, leading to a 16-hour delay. The UK's Civil Aviation Authority emphasized the need for increased awareness about the potential hazards of portable chargers, which can overheat or catch fire.
