Italian Town Varenna Enforces Fines for Inappropriate Tourist Attire to Preserve Local Quality of Life
The Italian town of Varenna, located near Lake Como, has implemented new regulations to manage the behavior of tourists, particularly concerning their attire. Tourists are now prohibited from walking around the town shirtless or in swimwear, except in designated areas such as beaches, piers, and boat docks. This measure, effective since June 27, aims to preserve the town's appearance and ensure the quality of life for its residents. Varenna, a small fishing village with a population of 650, attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. The local authorities have also capped tour group sizes to 25 people and imposed fines for the use of loudspeakers. These rules are part of a broader effort across Italy to address overtourism, with similar measures being adopted in other popular destinations like Sorrento and Portofino.
