U.S. House Committees Investigate Rising Global Adoption of Chinese AI Models
Two U.S. House Committees are currently investigating the increasing global adoption of Chinese Artificial Intelligence (AI) models, a development that has raised significant concern in Washington. According to usage data from major developer platforms like OpenRouter and Vercel, Chinese AI models have seen a substantial surge in popularity in 2026. On OpenRouter, Chinese models accounted for 57%-67% of tokens used in mid-September, a significant jump from 6%-13% in February. Similarly, on Vercel, their share rose to 55% in August from 11% in January. This growth is attributed to major performance gains in tasks such as coding and their cost-effectiveness compared to U.S. models. The U.S. has previously attempted to maintain its AI lead by restricting Chinese AI companies' access to advanced chips through export controls, but concerns persist about Chinese companies accessing Nvidia chips remotely via overseas data centers and using 'distillation' techniques to mimic older, established models.
