Roblox Faces Potential EU Regulation as Very Large Online Platform
Roblox, a popular online gaming platform, may soon be classified as a Very Large Online Platform (VLOP) under the European Union's Digital Services Act (DSA). This potential designation follows Roblox's announcement that it has surpassed the threshold of 45 million monthly active users in the EU, reaching an average of 48 million users for the six months ending February 13, 2026. The EU Commission, represented by spokesperson Thomas Regnier, has indicated that the classification of Roblox as a VLOP is possible, given its user numbers. If designated, Roblox will be required to comply with specific DSA rules aimed at mitigating risks related to illegal content, public security, and user well-being. The platform would need to identify and assess systemic risks, implement measures to address them, and establish an internal compliance function. Additionally, Roblox would be subject to annual independent audits and required to share data with the EU Commission and national authorities.
